ZiD Art is a supplier of large original hand made antique wall art sourced from the Balkan regions. Through out the Balkan region, kilims (carpets, rugs, tapestry) were part of many Balkan nations heritage and national folklore as far back as the 15th century.
For generations they were hand made and given as gifts for important events such as weddings, births, christenings, housewarming gifts and similar. Traditional kilims were used as a rugs or carpets or laid on top of home furniture as a decorative pice. Traditional folklore believes kilims brings good luck, protection from bad external influences and prosperities.
Placed in frames matched for the area they will bedisplayed in, these art pieces are fantastic for large walls in business or home rooms which need impact art that will have an extraordinary visual impression on visitors and where mass produced prints are simply not an option and original paintings are out of the budget.
Today many classical examples of kilims can be found throughout Bulgaria, Serbia, Turkey, the Balkan peninsula and in many other international collections. One of the chief qualities are the colour effects achieved through the choice and arrangement of colours.
Each piece is unique and takes skilled makers approximately 1 hour to weave 10 cm2. A piece 1.5M x 2M in size would take about 300 hours to complete, which translates to approximately 8 weeks of full time work.
Kilims are hand made on a hand press made of natural materials, either wool or cotton. While in the past production of this art was extremely popular, due to the modern lifestyle there is only a small number of practitioners of this trade left.
Framed and matched to modern design they are makinga comeback in places where design needs to show quality, value and high visual standard. They can be matched with traditional, antique or modern spaces. In addition to this they have fantastic acoustic properties.
All of the pieces supplied by us are sourced personally by us and are often more than 50 years old. Due to no stamps or labels on them the exact age can’t be determined.
